 Throughout 2017 the New England chapter of Sisters in Crime will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. As part of this celebration, they will be hosting events at a number of New England libraries and they were kind enough to reach out to Meredith Public library. On April 20th, authors Jessica Estevao (also writes under name Jessie Crockett), Connie Hambley, and Marilyn Rothstein will be sharing a talk on their writing style, their works and what Sisters in Crime has meant to their careers.
Sisters in Crime New England is a chapter of the international organization Sisters in Crime. On their website they describe themselves as authors, readers, publishers, agents, booksellers and librarians bound by a shared passion for the mystery genre and their support of women who write mysteries. Jessica Estevao writes the Change of Fortune Mysteries. The first in the series, Whispers Beyond the Veil, received a Publishers Weekly starred review and an Agatha Award nomination. She loves the beach, mysterious happenings and all things good-naturedly paranormal. While she lives for most of the year in New Hampshire with her dark and mysterious husband and exuberant children, she spends summers on the coast of Maine where she keeps an eye out for sea monsters and mermaids. As Jessie Crockett she’s the author of the nationally bestselling Sugar Grove Mysteries and the Daphne du Maurier Award winner, Live Free or Die. Jessie Crockett visited Meredith Public Library in October of 2015 where she discussed her book Live Free or Die, as well as her series The Sugar Grove Mysteries. She spoke about her works and about her style, the publishing process, and a bit about her life in New Hampshire. Connie Johnson Hambley grew up on a small dairy farm just north of New York City. When she was a young girl, an arsonist burned her family’s barn to the ground. From that experience grew the thrillers that have become The Charity, The Troubles, and The Wake to be released in June 2017. Together the books form the Jessica (Wyeth) trilogy, in which a feisty heroine battles the terrorist organization known as the Charity, a generations-old support network of the IRA. Connie’s short story, "Giving Voice," was published by Level Best Books in WINDWARD: Best New England Crime Stories in 2016. Connie serves as Membership Secretary of Sisters in Crime/New England. You can learn more about her at her website. Marilyn Rothstein writes under the name M.E. Kemp. M.E. Kemp is the author of a series of historical mysteries featuring two nosy Puritans as detectives. The series reflects her love of American history. Kemp was born in Oxford, MA, the town her ancestors helped settle in 1713 and where her family still resides today. Her roots go back even further, to Salem, MA in 1636. In seventh grade she won first prize in a national Scholastic Magazine contest with a New England-based short story. She still corresponds with the seventh grade teacher who sponsored her. Learn more about her on her website.
